Eel Catching in Setauket - An Oral History Collection
This collection of recorded oral histories was created in the late 1980s by Glenda Dickerson, a former theater professor at Stony Brook University. Professor Dickerson and her students conducted a series of interviews with Native and African American elders from the community now recognized as the Bethel-Christian Ave-Laurel Hill (BCALH) Historic District. Notably, BCALH is one of the few historic districts in New York State recognized for its surviving cultural, rather than its architectural, significance. These interviews preserve the voices of descendants from one of Long Island’s earliest historic communities of color, shedding light on a vital yet underrepresented aspect of New York State history.
Now available on NY Heritage, this collection enriches the historical narrative of the Three Village area while contributing to the broader diversity and collective memory of New York State’s past.
Scope of Collection (31 Recordings)
Audio recordings and assorted material of Native and African American community members including Setalcott Tribal elders. These items were uploaded to NYHDC through the Three Village Historical Society’s partnership with LILRC’s Accessing Archives Program in 2025.
In 1978 Charles L. Sachs, an independent consultant, was hired to inventory the collection while still in the possession of the family. Mr. Sachs produced handwritten inventories of the papers. The historical society received the collection in 1990 from the family.

The collection was processed in 1997 and 1998 and a finding aid was created. That finding aid has been updated and can be found at https://www.empireadc.org/
